What to do first in a Tampa Bay plumbing emergency
Before anything else, know where your main water shutoff is. In many Tampa Bay homes it's on the line where water enters the house, often near the garage or an outside wall, and there's also a valve at the meter near the street, which may need a meter key. If you can't find or turn yours, call us and we'll help you over the phone.
Then limit the damage. For a water heater leak, close the cold supply valve above the tank and turn off the breaker, or set a gas unit's control to off. For an overflowing toilet, turn the valve behind it clockwise. For a sewer backup, stop running water and don't flush. If water is near outlets or electrical panels, stay clear.
Hurricane season brings its own problems. Flooding can push sewage back into homes, and power outages can knock out water heaters. If floodwater reached a gas water heater, have it checked before relighting. After a storm, call us any time and we'll tell you honestly when we can get there.

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the main water valve right away, then open a faucet on the lowest level to drain the pressure. If water is near outlets or an electrical panel, stay clear and turn off power at the breaker only if you can do it safely. Move valuables out of the way, take photos, and call us at 727-732-4357.
Do you answer at night and on weekends?
Yes. Ground Up offers 24/7 emergency plumbing, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Call 727-732-4357 any time. We'll ask what's happening, help you limit the damage over the phone, and tell you when we can get there.
Is a sewer backup dangerous?
Sewage carries bacteria, so treat it seriously. Keep kids and pets away, don't run water or flush, and don't touch it without gloves. Skip the chemical drain cleaner. Call us to clear the line, and plan on proper cleanup for anything sewage touched, especially carpet and drywall.
Where is my main water shutoff valve?
In many Florida homes it's on the line where water enters the house, often near the garage, an outside wall, or the water heater. There's also a valve at the meter, usually near the street, which may need a meter key. Find yours before you need it; if you can't, we can show you during any visit.
